Hello! and, welcome to my website. I’m Martha Humphries, a personal historian who helps clients collect and preserve their life stories. Using my writing, editing and interviewing skills gained in more than 30 years as a journalist as well as a natural curiosity for details, I help clients resurrect memories and details from the past that make family stories come alive.
I began my career in publishing as assistant editor for a magazine for day care providers. From that starting point, I worked in magazine and book publishing in a variety of industries including retail, mainframe computers, business, housing and general interest. Throughout my career, I particularly enjoyed interviewing people and hearing their stories. With encouragement from a beloved uncle who served as our family storyteller, I began collecting and organizing photos and stories from my extended family and sharing them with my own children and other family members.
As I collected the family photos, I realized that I wanted to find the stories that went along with those pictures. I began by interviewing my mother about her family and her early years. It was thrilling to hear so many details and stories I’d never known about my mother and her family. After putting together a small book of pictures and memories for my family, I was hooked. I realized how wonderful it is to have the pictures and stories together in one beautiful book that can be shared with the whole family. Next, I discovered the Association of Personal Historians and attended my first conference in 2011. I was delighted to find a way to combine my writing and interviewing talents with my passion for personal histories.
If you have the time and interest, you can collect the family stories and memorabilia on your own. If you find you need help, call me. I’ll be happy to help you. If you want to collect your stories or those of someone near and dear to you but don’t have the time to put it all together, give me a call and we will talk about how I can help you.
The time to write the stories is now. However you do it, please find a way to preserve those precious stories now.
